More than one hundred international figures and organisations from more than twenty countries have signed a document in support of Catalunya's right to self-determination.
The manifesto organised by the Catalan National Assembly was signed by one hundred and sixteen international personalities including members of the European Parliament, academics, activists, and social and human rights organisations.
Among the signatories are Plaid Cymru MP, and President of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Catalonia, Hywel Williams, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquível, the president of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald, and the former president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya.
The manifesto condemns the judicial persecution shown to Catalan politicians and activists by Spanish authorities, especially for their participation in the independence referendum of October 1, 2017 and the 2019 protests.
The signatories denounced: “the criminalization of the political will of the people of Catalonia by the Spanish State, which does not cease, and which has led to the prosecution of nearly 3,300 people.”
The manifesto highlights the electoral results of the 14 February 2021 elections, in which pro-independence parties achieved a historic absolute majority of seats— and 52% of the votes.
