Housing crisis: Labour has followed "same neoliberal path" as Thatcher

Plaid Cymru politicians Mabon ap Gwynfor and Liz Saville Roberts have accused Welsh Labour of following the "same neoliberal path" as former Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher with respect to housing.

Writing in the Guardian, the politicians, who represent the constituency of Dwyfor Meirionnydd in Westminster and the Senedd, said: "The transformation of homes into assets has indeed been a policy of governments since Thatcher, but Labour in Wales have followed the same neoliberal path."

They also said that Welsh Labour's "blind faith in the market" translates to "a reluctance to grant special treatment to Welsh-speaking communities".

Welsh language

The Plaid Cymru politicians also warned that the housing crisis threatens the Welsh language.

They said that young Welsh speakers are being "priced out" of their communities— "leaving former family homes empty, hoarding value".

They also said that the "open housing market" is destroying these "unique" communities that "exist nowhere else".
