Gyms and leisure centres to reopen from 3 May

PUREGYM, Caerdydd

Gyms and leisure centres across the country will be allowed to reopen from 3 May— a week sooner than anticipated due to the continued fall in the number of new infections across the country and the increasing rates of vaccination.

Individual as well as one-to-one training will be permitted when gyms reopen.

However, exercise classes will still not be permitted under the new restrictions.

The decision about when to reopen gyms and leisure centres has been a contentious issue in the country, with many arguing that exercise is important for people's mental well health and well being.

Plaid Cymru and the Conservatives have welcomed the decision, but both parties have called for gyms and leisure centres to be reopened even sooner.

Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price said: "Plaid Cymru has been pressing the case for gyms to reopen as quickly and as safely as is possible because they are crucial for people's mental health and well-being. This new date, whilst welcome, is still not early enough."

Andrew RT Davies, the leader of the Conservatives in the Senedd said: "The great British vaccination programme protects more and more lives every day and gives us the ability to restore freedoms in a safe but accelerated manner."
